Yankalilla Community Annexe
"A holistic approach to the development of the child in partnership
with home."
The Annexe
- Children work in groups according to ability or age.
- Academic work is individually programmed and non-competitive.
- Children enjoy social interaction with the community.
- The Annexe offers a unique shared schooling program.
- The Annexe brings home, school and community together.
- The Annexe offers a unique approach to the classroom by vertically
grouped children in place of year levels.
- Parents have the opportunity to take part in their children's daily
education.
Shared Schooling
Shared Schooling is a combination of home schooling and part time attendance
at an approved educational institution. It is underpinned by the beliefs
of family and school collaboration and harmony, negotiation and constructivism.
Curriculum delivery is reflective of family needs, beliefs and values.
Philosophy
- Parents are an integral part of a child's learning experience.
- A child best develops and learns in an atmosphere of freedom, love
and trust.
- Children can learn as much from themselves and others as from teachers
and other adults.
- A strong healthy relationship between student and teacher is vital
for a positive learning environment.
- Children develop stronger individual personalities and greater levels
of confidence in the absence of unnecessary pressure and competition.
- Children's play is their way of exploring and experimenting while
building relationships with others and learning about themselves.
- Responsibility, like self-discipline, cannot be taught. It is learnt
by real experience and from the example of respected adults.
The Annexe Environment
The Annexe Classroom is a large historic building, built in 1859 as
the original Yankalilla School called "Wissanger". It is set on half
a hectare with a creek along the southern boundary.
The school has two main teaching areas as well as:
- Kitchen
- Art Room
- Oval
- BBQ Area
We are also fortunate to share the excellent facilities of the Yankalilla
Area School.
