TARGET WORK

The Target Work program is an opportunity to be involved in a realistic work environment of significance to the community. It is a practical skills training initiative of DECD based on construction programs for students with a career focus on Trades incorporating brick laying, brick paving, carpentry, metal work, landscaping and irrigation. The students attend the program for one day per week and are involved in completing small construction projects around the local community. Students will have the opportunity to achieve a SACE subject for this program through Community Studies. They will also be accredited with competencies for certificate 1 in Introductory Vocational Education.

Students have worked on a range of projects in the local community. Such as;

  • Shelter Construction at Second Valley / Carrickalilinga.
  • Board Walk at Normanville / Bungalla River
  • Community Centre general upgrade -Second Valley Community Hall
  • Roadside and Coastal Threat Abatement and Revegetation - Myponga Beach Road.
  • Construction of steps at Rapid Bay.
  • Pedestrian walkway at Second Valley.
  • Outdoor Classroom at Yankalilla Area School's Edible Kitchen Garden.
  • Rebuilding as shelter, landscaping and paving in a community park in Myponga.
  • Landscaping and paving the Community Hall at Inman Valley.

The program provides students with a sense of ownership and pride in what they will achieve and will afford them the necessary trade and interpersonal skills for the future.

Presently the young men are involved in two projects, the main one being the refurbishment of a free standing pergola in the main street of Myponga. This is nearing completion and should look good in a few weeks time. Students and staff have been working closely with the local council on this. The other is restoring an old trailer and equipping it with shelves etc so it can be used by the Outdoor Ed department.
