Technical StudiesOur school manages to give students in middle and senior school the chance to do woodwork, metalwork and photography. The Tech Centre is able to provide a safe and productive work area for students. Through both practical and theoretical studies, students are taught a range of useful skills, both vocational and for use in everyday life. Year 7's are introduced to and taught to use basic hand tools such as hammers and saws. They then progress to use machinery such as bench sanders and drills. They will design and make small crafts such as games and puzzles. Year 8/9 - One of the things this age group is involved in is a 10 week research assignment, their task is to design and make a model drag racing car. During this time they will continue to work on their practical skills in the use of hand tools and advance to using machinery such as band saws and routers. Drag cars have to be built to precise measurements and refinished with a paint colour scheme. When complete these cars are actually raced on a length of track powered by canisters of C02 gas.
Year 11-12 - By this stage students who have chosen Tech normally have a genuine interest in the subject. Hence Year 11's and12's are given the responsibility to choose projects and proceed to the design, process and manufacturing stages. This would probably be a major project such as a piece of furniture, or something that will keep them interested and busy for a sustained period of time. They will need to produce competent designs and working drawings, think of appropriate materials and have contingency plans. The final outcome of the project would be put forward as their summative piece for moderation. Junior School TechnologyJunior School students develop a range of design skills in Technology lessons. They use a variety of materials and equipment to make products in a safe and responsible way. By using wheels and axles, pulleys, Lego, motors, pneumatics and hydraulics equipment, students are able to develop their understanding of Systems Technology. Students reflect on their work to consider what went well and what could be improved. Junior school Technology is often linked with other units of work being taught in the class at the time to develop a contextual understanding. | ||
