Welcome to Yankalilla Area School. Our school's core values are: care, respect, honesty, responsibility and excellence.

THE ARTS AT YANKALILLA

Yankalilla Area School students have been gradually building an enviable reputation for excelling in the visual and performing arts. It is an expectation now that all students will have an opportunity to have their work publicly displayed and their performances enjoyed by the wider community.

Yankalilla Area School offers ongoing participation in the national Rock Eisteddfod for secondary students and the Wakakirri for primary students as part of the performing arts programme. The Leafy Sea Dragon Festival provides another opportunity for our students to participate in the visual and performing arts. Our Yr 4-5 students are given the opportunity to participate in the Junior School Choir and they often perform at school and community events. There are also singing lessons each work for classes in junior primary.

Yankalilla offers Visual arts to yr12 and students with an interest in the arts are encouraged to take advantage of the Art Practical course available at stage 2. The course allows students to focus on producing major works in any media as well as extending a particular skill through a practical extension. 70% of the yr12 art course is practical and 30% theoretical.

In past years the school has received recognition through various designs and competitions. Students are given the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of events and competitions, these have included; Peace Posters for lions international, Kangaroo designs for sculptures in London. Our students received a bronze medal from the commonwealth games committee for providing art works to athletes in Melbourne and artwork was sent to the Olympic Games for display in Beijing. Our students recently featured in an exhibition put on by “S.A.L.A.” with the theme of “I am me”
And one of our students had her artwork printed in the Adelaide Advertiser.

Our visual arts program provides a huge range of learning opportunities for students to experience. These include; PAINTING,  DRAWING,  CERAMICS,  MACHE,  SCULPTURE,  WEAVING,  COLLAGE, POSTERS,  DESIGN,  PHOTOSHOP,  PRINTING to name a few.

We recognise that not all of our students enjoy or are good at the visual arts and while there is a compulsory unit in the Junior and Middle school, it becomes an optional subject at senior level. Our visual arts courses extend through to yr12 and many students who discover their hidden talents in the early years often choose to follow the subject through into their final year.

We value “creativity” at YAS and have excellent facilities available for students to demonstrate their abilities.
